Job Summary:
We are looking for a detail-oriented and proactive individual to fill the role of Field Safety Generalist, for our Southern California region covering Kern County to Riverside County. This position will be responsible for overseeing safety protocols and procedures on construction sites.
This position assists project managers, superintendents, and forepersons in inspecting, educating, and adhering to Company and OSHA health & safety and risk management policies and procedures on construction projects.
Identify, eliminate, and control hazardous conditions on projects that may lead to injury and/or property damage using job specific safety standards, best management practices and Company safety procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct regular safety inspections and audits on construction sites to identify hazards and ensure compliance with safety protocols. (OSHA/MSHA, Company policies, etc.)
- Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses, and develop corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
- Renew Underground Service Alert (U.S.A.) tickets and maintain U.S.A. log
- Travel is expected to be 75% of the time between jobsite locations (company vehicle is provided).
- Collaborate with project managers, the safety and human resources departments, and site supervisors to address safety concerns and promote a culture of safety awareness.
- Ensure safe work practices and safe working conditions in accordance with all Federal, State, and Local regulations, and Owner/contractual requirements.
- Communicates with the superintendents, forepersons and craft workers in the field/crew as it relates to both good and bad safety practices observed.
- Documents all safety violations or unsafe conditions/activities; ensures corrective measures are immediately implemented; follow through to verify corrections have been made.
- Conducts/assists with weekly safety meetings for all assigned projects.
- Accompanies all safety, health, and insurance inspectors on walk-through jobsite tours; assists in preparing written appeals for safety/health violations & citations.
- Provide technical and administrative direction to on-site safety and first aid personnel.
- Promotes companywide Safety Program. Serves as a role model and champion for safety and safety compliance.
- Maintains confidentiality with all employee’s information, ensures it is shared only with those with a legitimate business need to know, and in a confidential and secure manner.
- Daily walks about the construction site and making safety observations, which are to be noted on log. Safety observations should include any observed health or safety deficiencies and/or recent corrections or improved safety features.
- When requested, respond to construction incident scene(s) and assist with incident investigations.
- Conduct on-site safety training for new workers assigned to the project.
- May assume other duties as required/needed.
- May be required to work beyond scheduled work shifts as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Proven experience as safety representative in heavy civil construction
- Knowledge in the area of safety procedures for all types of work being performed on construction projects
- Outstanding attention to detail and observation ability
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities
- Thorough knowledge of OSHA Construction Order Regulations; Familiar with MSHA
- Ability to evaluate construction work activities with respect to safety and loss control.
- Promote a positive work environment and employee engagement initiatives.
- Ability to train and educate others.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Education and Experience:
- Five (5) years of continuous heavy civil construction industry safety experience
- Some college (4 years preferred) or equivalent work experience in lieu of degree.
- Must possess understanding of current Safety Administration, Federal, State, Local and CAL/OSHA,MSHA, HAZWOPER regulations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
Must have completed safety training and maintain valid certifications for:
- First aid/ Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- Cal/OSHA 30-hour construction training course

Physical Demands:
- Performance of the required duties will require physical ability to navigate and walk on uneven exposed raw dirt, gravel and other construction surfaces.
- Negotiate work areas under construction.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Performing this job requires use of hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, sit, talk, and hear, stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Hearing and speaking ability sufficient to carry on a conversation with another individual (or groups of individuals) in person and over the telephone.
- Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects with the human body.
Work Environment:
- The employee regularly works on-site at the construction work site where the employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts.
- High precarious places.
- Fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions and uneven terrain.
- The noise in these work environments is usually moderate.
